In the United States, conservatives do not look favorably on the REAL ID Act that requires state governments to assemble and maintain a dossier of relevant verified documentation before issuing a drivers license or non-driver ID card. They oppose this because of privacy concerns and mistrust of the government. The government says the law is necessary to prevent terrorism. Liberals say the law drives undocumented immigrants further underground and does nothing to prevent terrorism.

Conservatives do, however, favor a requirement for presenting ID as a requirement for voting in an election. Liberals accuse conservatives of using this as a tactic for discouraging or preventing poor minorities from voting. Conservatives say they seek to prevent voter fraud.
