The mid-ocean ridge is formed along a divergent or constructive plate boundary between two plates of oceanic crust. A classic example is the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where the Eurasian and African Plates are moving away from the North and South American Plates.

A plate is not classified as convergent, divergent, or transform, a plate boundary i.e. a boundary between plates is. All three types of plate boundary can be found along the edges of the North American plate.

Two plates can either converge, diverge, or transform. A convergent boundary is when two plates come together, a divergent boundary is when they move apart, and a transform boundary is when two plates slide against each other in opposite directions.
