Capital punishment is essentially synonymous with the death penalty. Though there are varying specific methods that could be used, if the person doesn't eventually die as a result, then it's not capital punishment.

What is your hypothesis about capital punishment?

It is not nor will ever be a deterrant to murder or other heinous acts. In the US, the death penalty is unfairly imposed in regards to race, social and economic status. The possibility of executing and innocent person far outweighs the argument for imposing the death penalty, and therefore capital punishment should be abolished.

Can you get sent on death row by stealing food in Middle Eastern countries?

No. There are physical punishments that used to be inflicted in some countries for theft such as in Somalia. These punishments could include the chopping off of hands. However, theft does not get a person the death penalty. There is no country in the Middle East in recent memory that has used a punishment other than incarceration (sometimes for decades) for theft.

Is stiff penalty same as death penalty?

When someone refers to a 'stiff penalty' it is just a way of saying that a person will get the maximum punishment that the law allows for that particular crime. Such as armed robbery may carry a penalty of 25 years to life. The stiffest penalty for this crime would be life. The death penalty is definitely the stiffest penalty for murder in the 1st degree. It is the maximum punishment for taking someones life with premeditation or several other factors that decide if a case is elegible for capital punishment.

Why death penalty does not discourage crime?

What US Supreme Court cases supported the death penalty?

The Supreme Court has never declared that the death penalty is unconstitutional. In the 1972 case of Furman v. Georgia, the Court ruled that the death penalty was unconstitutional as applied in three specific cases. This effectively put a moratorium on the death penalty as lower courts struggled to determine when (or if) the death penalty could be applied. The Furman opinion was per curium, with each of the nine justices writing their own opinions (5 concurring and 4 dissenting).Four years later, in 1976, the Supreme Court made clear in the case of Gregg v. Georgia that the death penalty wasconstitutional. Georgia had amended their death penalty statute in the interceding four years and now had additional protections for the defendant in capital cases, including a two-phased trial: one for guilt and one for sentencing. The Court in Gregg summarized Furman thusly:"While Furman did not hold that the infliction of the death penalty per se violates the Constitution's ban on cruel and unusual punishments, it did recognize that the penalty of death is different in kind from any other punishment imposed under our system of criminal justice. Because of the uniqueness of the death penalty, Furman held that it could not be imposed under sentencing procedures that created a substantial risk that it would be inflicted in an arbitrary and capricious manner."
