Can a Sony DVD player play a Blu-ray DVD?

A DVD player cannot play a BluRay disc. A BluRay player can play both BluRay discs and DVDs.

Can you upgrade your HD DVD player to play Blu-ray discs?

HD DVD and Bluray are both high definition disc formats but they were not only competitive formats but incompatible formats as well. While the battle for the HD market was in progress a handful of players were sold that would support both formats. These players were expensive and very few were ever sold. Unfortunately, HD DVD only players will not play Bluray and Bluray players will not play HD DVD discs. It is still worth keeping HD DVD players as they are the only players capable of HD DVD discs.

Is blu ray better than other DVD players?

BluRay is the name of a high definition DVD player, developed by Sony. The alternative is HDDVD released by Toshiba at around the same time. In terms of image quality, there is little to choose between them but it is commercial considerations that separate them. BluRay has captured the majority of the market and most of the large distribution companies have opted to support BluRay rather than HD DVD. The battle between the two formats looks to have been won by BluRay and Toshiba are reluctantly admitting that HD DVD will give way to Sony's product. While HD DVD is not quite dead yet, opinions within the trade suggest that HD DVD will not be around for a great deal longer. Both formats will play standard definition DVDs so they will replace existing DVD players.

Can you play DVDs on a blueray player?

It truly depends on the BRDVD player in question. Blue-Ray and DVD use different light wavelength for their lasers, and are not directly compatible (DVD and HD-DVD are). There are a few "dual-head" players that provide two laser sources, and hence can play both Blue-Ray and DVD/HDDVD discs. But, like I said, it depends on the player if it supports that functionality. It isn't that uncommon, though. On the PC market for example, 'combo' devices that combine DVD-burning abilities with Blu-Ray playback have existed for some time.

Do all DVDs come in both standard and Blu-ray format?

No. The difference between Blu-Rays and DVDs is that Blu-Ray is high definition format while DVD is standard format

When is bluray going to combine with vcr?

There have been a number of combined VHS and DVD players as well as several VHS and DVD recorders. The combination was a convenient one for playing both formats from a single unit or for transferring VHS to a more robust and future-proof format. The market for combined VHS and Bluray players is far smaller. The customers who are now buying Bluray players are generally the same people who invested in DVD technology some years ago and have moved away from VHS already. VHS is of course a standard definition format. Recording it onto a Bluray disc will not enhance the quality and it certainly won't turn the VHS content into HD. For these reasons, it makes little commercial sense for a manufacturer to produce a VHS and Bluray combination. While it is impossible to predict what each manufacturer might do in the future, it is safe to say that a combination player is very unlikely.

Does regular DVD's play on blue ray?

Do HD DVDs only play on HD DVD players or PS3s?

Let me elaborate a little more than a simple "yes". HD DVDs will, as of November, 2007, only play on a device that has the "HD DVD" logo somewhere on the device. Currently, Toshiba is the biggest manufacturer of HD DVD players; also, the XBOX 360 has a separate, external HD DVD drive that can be purchased for around $180. PS3s will NOT play HD DVDs. The PS3 is made by Sony, which is devoted to the main competing high definition format to HD DVD, and that is BLU RAY. Unlike the XBOX, the PS3 comes with the Blu-Ray player already installed. Just as Blu-Ray players will not play HD DVDs, the same goes for HD DVD players; they won't play BLU-Ray disks. However, the comany LG has released a dual-format player on the market which will play both HD DVDs and Blu-Rays, and Samsung plans to release their new dual-format players by January of 2008. The LG and Samsung players will each cost around $1000. One more thing: Both Blu-Ray and HD DVD players WILL play standard DVDs and use an "upconvert" feature to polish the appearance of your standard definition movies so they look almost as good as High definition movies. Music CDs can also be played in MOST high definition players, at least the newer ones. Check with the retailer or manufacturer if CD playback is really important to you.

Can you play an HD DVD in a Blu-ray player?

The introduction of high definition discs saw two formats launched. Bluray is one and HD DVD was the other. The format war was won by the Bluray system and HD DVD was withdrawn in 2009. Both Bluray and HD DVD are high definition players but note that "HD DVD" is the name of the format and is confusingly close to the generic description of high definition disc players. Bluray and HD DVD are not compatible so a disc of one type will not play on the other format. There are a handful of dual format disc players but they were expensive and few were sold. If you have HD DVD discs then you need to hand on to an HD DVD player if you want to watch them. All high definition discs on sale now are Bluray and of course will need a Bluray player to play them.

Can a Blu-ray DVD player be operated on a tv that is not HD?

Almost all Bluray players have an anlog output as well as an HD HDMI output. The analog output will be composite, S-video or component and will output a standard definition signal. The SD signal should connect to any television, SD or HD. Remember that the signal will be in standard definition. There is no magic that changes the quality of the image into HD just because the original format was HD.

Can a blu-ray DVD be played on an HD DVD player?

No. An HD DVD will only play on an HD DVD player. This format was released in competition with BluRay. It lost the battle after about one year and was withdrawn from sale. There are few HD DVD players and discs around and none have been made for a number of years. the demise of the HD DVD video format should not come as a surprise when the two formats are compared and closely examined. First, the quality of both in terms of picture and sound are a huge step up from a regular DVD in resolution. However, when further investigating Blu-Ray, the storage capacity is four times greater than that of High Definition DVD. In my opinion, this is perhaps the largest deal breaker for High Definition DVD. Unless the disc has some sentimental value, there is probably little point in retaining it.
