I'd stay out of the water, and in a boat. On foot a side arm is a good idea. With permit of course. Probably on a boat and high above the water unless you want to be swimming with the fishes and not catching them.

The dangers within Everglades NP include (and I list them in approximate degree of danger to people) automobiles, heat, sunlight, swamp, mosquitoes, and alligators. I list the last even though there has NEVER been a fatal alligator attack within the Park.
