Traditional exercises and home treatments don't work because they fail to fix the physical problem and only provide temporary relief. Sciatica is just a symptom of something affecting your sciatic nerve to cause the pain and discomfort. A chiropractor can help get to the root of the problem and help align your body correctly to prevent the pain from reoccurring.

There are many causes for pain related to the sciatic nerve, located in the lower back and extending down to the foot on each side of the body. Sciatica is a general term for the pain that is experienced in the sciatic nerve. Most often, the pain is cause by unnecessary compression of the nerve, as can be the case with a herniated spinal disc, or it can be caused by inflammation due to overuse, stress, or injury. Sometimes, diseases or medical conditions can cause sciatic nerve pain, such as a tumor growing near the nerve, or bone spurs pressing into it from the vertebrae or pelvis. Sciatic nerve pain relief can be very different depending on the cause.

In general, the specific portion of the sciatic nerve that causes pain in many situations is the root of the nerve, located at the base of the spinal column. If compression from the vertebrae is the source, sciatic nerve pain relief can be achieved by removing any pressure being applied to the roots of the nerve. This can involve light exercise and stretching that pulls the vertebrae apart, massage for the same effect, and potentially even the use of a posterior brace to rebalance some of the body's weight away from the spine.

If the pain is caused by an inflammation of the sciatic nerve, then the treatments for pain relief can be very similar to those associated with other types of inflammation. Alternating hot and cold packs applied to the area in pain, short periods of rest and immobility, and over the counter pain relievers that reduce swelling can all work very well for minor amounts of pain. These methods of sciatic nerve pain relief might be temporary, however, if the cause of the pain is more serious.

In some instances, a separate medical problem could be the cause of the sciatic nerve pain. A herniated disc might require more rest and less stretching than would normally be recommended for sciatic nerve pain relief. A calcification on the spine or pelvis that is applying pressure to the nerve could require a medical procedure to remove the bone spur. A serious case could be lesions or tumors that have formed on or near the nerve since these could be indicators of cancer, kidney damage, or other medical conditions that require immediate attention.

Can an intestine move and cause sciatic pain?

Great question! Typically sciatic pain is caused either by bony pressure on the sciatic nerve or more commonly by muscle pressure on the nerve as it passes through the large gluteal (buttock) muscles. The nerve isn't in the abdominal cavity where the intestines are so it doesn't seem likely that could be the cause of sciatic pain. Intestines can be filled with fecal material or feel lumpy but they are pretty well attached.

How Sciatic Nerve Pain Can Affect You?

The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body which runs down the lower back and through the legs. Pain, numbness or tingling associated with the sciatic nerve is often referred to as sciatica. If the spinal nerves in this area are compressed, it can cause pain in the lower back, buttocks, legs and feet. It can cause constant pain, reduced reflexes and trouble walking depending on the origination of pain in the spine.CausesA bulging or herniated disc that compresses the nerves is a common cause of sciatic nerve pain. Also, conditions such as spinal stenosis, piriformis syndrome, arthritis and degenerative disc disease can cause sciatic nerve pain. In addition, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, which causes pain in the tailbone, can mimic sciatica. Sciatica can be diagnosed by discussing symptoms with your doctor or with an x-ray which can show the underlying cause of the pain.TreatmentSciatic nerve pain normally resolves itself over time. This is not a comfort to those who are having painful symptoms. Treatment options include anti-inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen in addition to a warm compress. The doctor may suggest physical therapy, prescription medications or epidural steroid injections to reduce inflammation.Strength training exercises can also help improve sciatica by strengthening not only the muscles and ligaments around the spine, but also the abdominal muscles which help to support the spine. Hamstring stretches, yoga and low-impact aerobic activities such as walking or swimming can also help reduce sciatic nerve pain. Exercise causes the body's natural pain relievers, endorphins, to release creating natural pain relief as well.Alternative treatments for sciatic nerve pain have been shown to have results. These include spinal adjustments by a chiropractor, massage therapy and acupuncture. Chiropractic care can help to adjust the spinal column alignment. Acupuncture and massage can help blood flow and energy flow to the affected area. The U.S. FDA has approved acupuncture for back pain treatment. Pain due to herniated disc may require further medical intervention such as microdiscectomy spinal surgery.
