Obesity exists in every country. In 2005, 37.5% of the population was overweight in France and 9.4% was obese. Figures for the USA were 65.7% overweight and 30.6% obese.

Of the developed countries, France is one where the problem is less frequent. Only Japan and Korea have significantly lower rates of overweight and obese people.

In 2010 French dieteticians noted a decrease in child obesity, giving hope that the previous increase may be over.
