Peru has no restrictions currently on the amount of visitors that can enter Machu Picchu daily. While it has been made a National Heritage site, tens of thousands of tourists enter daily and this does damage to the integrity of the ruin site.

There's a train which travels from Cuzco to a town near the base of the mountains by Machu Picchu, and from there you can take a bus. I visited Machu Picchu (after Cuzco) recently and it is beautiful! Anyhow, just ask any police officer or store owner and they can help tell you where to go - they're very friendly!
