It depends on which route you plan to take. The Pacific Highway north from Sydney has many rest stops and free campsites for travellers and those wishing to stop overnight. Indeed, anywhere throughout NSW offers these facilities. Once you reach the Queensland border, it is quite a different matter. For some reason, Queensland offers no free campsites along the main eastern highway, and potential spots are always signed with a "No overnight camping" warning. If you venture inland, the local councils are far less retentive and much more welcoming, but if you plan to travel along the coast, you would be advised to book in to caravan parks.
