Are there earthquakes in Alaska?
Occasionally. Alaska is the state that has the most earthquakes in America.
It is also the site of the 2nd largest earthquake ever recorded by man (magnitude 9.2) and the largest in the US which occurred in Prince William Sound near Anchorage on Friday, March 27, 1964.
The Pacific plate is moving northward towards Alaska. It is subducting under Alaska and the Aleutian Islands as well as the easternmost end of Siberia (which is on the North American plate). This subduction causes earthquakes as well as volcanoes. Alaska has on average 2-3 times more earthquakes than California. Alaska accounts for over 57% of all eathquakes in the United States.
