my son caught 2 fish in the river near mt Crosby which is not far from Brisbane. The water is tidal and the fish was about 2 foot long, has no teeth, a tail like a cat fish, two fins toward the tail and two fins on the under belly and is brown in colour. Does anyone have any ideas as to what it may be. Regards Bronnie
Fish have gills, scales, and fins. Some fish have the trait of having teeth.

It means that something ripped their tails or fins, most likely the teeth of another fish.
The first fish were tiny, only about an inch long, had no jaws or teeth, and no fins. They did have spinal columns, though. An example is Haikouichthys.

all fish have fins
A perch fish has one pair of pelvic fins, totaling two pelvic fins. These fins are located on the underside of the fish, behind the pectoral fins. Pelvic fins play a role in stabilizing the fish as it swims.

Salmon is a breed of fish that covers a broad species to include the trout, whitefish and grayling. It is not known how many teeth a salmon has.
The flaps on a fish are called fins, which help the fish to maintain balance, steer, and move through water. There are different types of fins on a fish, such as dorsal fins, pectoral fins, pelvic fins, anal fins, and caudal fins.
