Kindle books are purchased through Amazon. They're simply electronic versions of the printed books, and both Amazon and the authors/publishers get their share of money for their work.
Public domain books (such as those from Project Gutenberg) are available for free. You download those manually to your Kindle.
For US customers, there's a selection of Kindle public domain books that are available for free from the Kindle store. They do cost a few dollars elsewhere, because Amazon needs to cover the wireless delivery expenses.

Yes there is a large range of selected titles which do not cost any money. Although most books require a credit card purchase.
There are also legal online libraries that offer digital classics in .mobi, .pdf, .doc and other formats supported by Kindle.

∙ 11y agoThere are thousands of books available in the public domain that can be read on the Kindle. Look for Free Kindle Books on Amazon for those specifically formatted for the reader, or you can send any text book you want to the Kindle.
