New Zealand sits astride two tectonic plates, the Pacific, and the Australian.

The Pacific plate is subducting (diving under) the Australian plate in the north, and in the south, the Australian plate is subducting under the Pacific one. Midway between these two extremes are found the Southern Alps, and this uplift is probably caused by this complex motion.
