That woven looking metal pipe is called the flex pipe and is not a catalytic converter. On all the 4 cylinder models there is only 1 CAT. On the v6's there are 2 resonators, but still only 1 CAT. The exhaust trail goes as follows, From the engine-headers(or exhaust manifold)-downpipe-flexpipe-straightpipe-CAT-resonator-straightpipe-muffler. Hope this helps darksidesteve

What does a mechanic charge for a catalytic converter for a mercury villager?

The Villager has two converters. The whole front converter/pipe assembly sells for around $300 or so, (NON-California), the rear converter for around $150, also NON-California. Generic converters can be installed as well by welding them into the existing pipes, this should cost no more than $150 each. California models require different converters certified for that state, and may also have additional converters attached to the exhaust manifolds. These can be VERY expensive, up to $1000 each.

What is in a catalytic converter?

A catalytic converter works by the various precious minerals and metals inside it. Quite simply they convert the dangerous chemicals inside the exhaust gases(carbon monixide,NOx etc) into less harmful ones (carbon dioxide etc). Due to the minerals and metals inside though they are often target to thieves as they can fetch quite a high price at the scrap yard. The catalytic converters that got stole off the HGV's at our work had a value of £800!Catalytic converters work by having the heated gases react with the precious metals in the catalytic converter. There is platinum palladium and rhodium in a catalytic converter all three are very expensive and rare metals. Because of the honeycomb shape of the catalytic biscuit there is a lot of surface area for the gas to be neutralized on.Prior to catalytic converters being on every car for every mile you drove your car would punch out somewhere around 100g's of pollution. After the addition of catalytic converters with platinum and palladium this number dropped to less than 1g of pollution per mile. After the addition of rhodium it dropped N/E which is non detectable.

Is it ok to take off the catalytic converters if the truck is over 20 years?

maybe you would have to check with the rules around your town. most muffler shops wont touch that cause bye law in some places you have to have that on.

Where are the catalytic converters on a 1998 grand marquis?

Between the "Y" or "H" pipe and the exhaust manifolds. One on each side of the engine with two converters in each pipe. If you crawl under the car, they should be on either side of the transmission. They will look like a smaller version of the muffler, but they will have heat shields welded around the actual converter.

Will you lose compression without a catalyc converter?

no. compression can be lost in different ways such as, when the either the cylinder walls or the rings around the piston wear out, bent or broken valves, broken piston or possibly a head gasket. catalytic converters are on car to reduce emissions only. they do so by using a catalyst to convert carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides into less harmful gases. catalytic converters can "plug up" and create back pressure in the exhaust causing the engin not to run properly or at all.

Scrap metal price is free?

Globally scrap prices for vehicle and complete car bodies varies. Specific to the United States, an average price for a scrap car body is around $250 for the vehicle. One should call the local scrap yard or look online for sources of current auto scrap prices. There are also many companie that will come and pickup your scrap car and pay you. Again, please shop around

Parts and labor costs for catalytic converter for crown Victoria?

If you go to Ford for the part, you might as well buy another car, that's how much they want, something like $ 1,300 per side, just for the parts. If you have a good muffler shop in your area, since the crown has 2 converters, you will be able to get the job done for around $ 500.00. These would be after market converters, just as good, for the 2 of them installed. Check it out.

Where are the catalytic converters?

if your car has duel exhaust, they should be located a foot or two away from the headers, since the exhaust heat makes them work. They have to be cut off by a mechanic, and new ones welded back on as well. They should be closer to the engine then the muffler, around the transmission in an impala. hope this helps

Do catalytic converters rattle and if so why?

Yes they can rattle. It normally happenes for one of two reasons. One, the outer heat shield rusts loose. Two, the inner structure of the converter fails and turns into a big lump that bounces around inside. Yes they will rattle when they are wearing out and bits and peices of the inner material start coming out and start vibrating around.

Is there a temporary fix for catalytic converters?

yes cut the cat. and weld an straight pipe same size as the mufler and problem fix The above answer is 100% wrong. First off it is illegal to remove a catalytic converter from any vehicle without installing a new one. Secondly, modern engines today will not run properly with the converter removed. The check engine light will stay on and you will have poor performance and the car will get poor fuel mileage. The only fix for a bad converter is to replace it. Just make 100% sure it is defective and find out why it was destroyed. Otherwise you will just destroy the new one. Also converters are guaranteed for around 80,000 miles on most vehicles.

What does DTC code P0431 on Mitsubishi montero mean and is this an emergency?

Trouble code P0431 means: Warmup Catalyst Efficiency Low (Bank 2) This means that your driver side catalytic converter is not running is it's most efficient state. You will probably need to replace the Y pipe that runs from each side of the motor into the single pipe. It has two catalytic converters on it so even if it were bank 1 you would still be replacing them both anyway. Don't confuse the Y pipe for the OTHER catalytic (single) converter that is located downstream on the single pipe. The Y pipes run $250-$450 for the part on the internet and if you don't know how to change it you will need to pay a muffler shop to put it on for you. Alternately it may be caused by bad gas, a faulty O2 sensor, or various other things but the fact that the sensor is reporting the error usually means the cats are going out and the sensor is fine. It happens around 100k+ with the Monteros. You can try pulling the battery to reset the code and try using premium gas from now on and see if it returns but it probably will. Hope that helps.
