Are there two catalytic converters on a 1995 Mitsubishi galant and if so is the fron one the one with the woven looking metal around it?

That woven looking metal pipe is called the flex pipe and is not a catalytic converter. On all the 4 cylinder models there is only 1 CAT. On the v6's there are 2 resonators, but still only 1 CAT. The exhaust trail goes as follows, From the engine-headers(or exhaust manifold)-downpipe-flexpipe-straightpipe-CAT-resonator-straightpipe-muffler. Hope this helps darksidesteve

The Villager has two converters. The whole front converter/pipe assembly sells for around $300 or so, (NON-California), the rear converter for around $150, also NON-California. Generic converters can be installed as well by welding them into the existing pipes, this should cost no more than $150 each. California models require different converters certified for that state, and may also have additional converters attached to the exhaust manifolds. These can be VERY expensive, up to $1000 each.
What is in a catalytic converter?
A catalytic converter works by the various precious minerals and metals inside it. Quite simply they convert the dangerous chemicals inside the exhaust gases(carbon monixide,NOx etc) into less harmful ones (carbon dioxide etc). Due to the minerals and metals inside though they are often target to thieves as they can fetch quite a high price at the scrap yard. If you go to Ford for the part, you might as well buy another car, that's how much they want, something like $ 1,300 per side, just for the parts. If you have a good muffler shop in your area, since the crown has 2 converters, you will be able to get the job done for around $ 500.00. if your car has duel exhaust, they should be located a foot or two away from the headers, since the exhaust heat makes them work. First off it is illegal to remove a catalytic converter from any vehicle without installing a new one. Secondly, modern engines today will not run properly with the converter removed. The check engine light will stay on and you will have poor performance and the car will get poor fuel mileage. The only fix for a bad converter is to replace it. Just make 100% sure it is defective and find out why it was destroyed. Otherwise you will just destroy the new one. Also converters are guaranteed for around 80,000 miles on most vehicles.

Trouble code P0431 means: Warmup Catalyst Efficiency Low (Bank 2) This means that your driver side catalytic converter is not running is it's most efficient state. You will probably need to replace the Y pipe that runs from each side of the motor into the single pipe. It has two catalytic converters on it so even if it were bank 1 you would still be replacing them both anyway. Don't confuse the Y pipe for the OTHER catalytic (single) converter that is located downstream on the single pipe. The Y pipes run $250-$450 for the part on the internet and if you don't know how to change it you will need to pay a muffler shop to put it on for you. Alternately it may be caused by bad gas, a faulty O2 sensor, or various other things but the fact that the sensor is reporting the error usually means the cats are going out and the sensor is fine. It happens around 100k+ with the Monteros. You can try pulling the battery to reset the code and try using premium gas from now on and see if it returns but it probably will. Hope that helps.
