You can't exactly say they are "common" in that sense, since May 26, 2014 is a single date that will only ever happen once. Overall, however, tornadoes are relatively common in late May. Severe weather such as tornadoes is very difficult to predict that far into the future. The Storm Prediction Center has mentioned that there is potential for thunderstorms through portions of the Plains and Mississippi Valley on May 26, but it is too early to tell if there will be any tornadoes.
