Depends on the individual dog and the individual child. Very young children (6 and under) can be very rough on dogs or "tease" the dog. Westies ARE terriers and terriers will NOT put up with rough handling or teasing from children.
(NO child should EVER be allowed to treat ANY dog like that ... but far too many parents have the attitude that dogs should somehow put up with that from children. Such parents should wait until the child is older to get a dog...or not get any dog at all.)

I would get the Westie, but they are related to Scotties and I love Scotties. I like the terrier group, but they are stubborn, smart, and good dogs.
