Are worms or parasites contagious between kids?

Catching worms from the family pet is not common although it is possible.

Roundworm; only spread to humans by ingesting roundworm eggs. This can happen when a child comes in contact with contaminated soil or sand and then transfers eggs to the mouth via contaminated fingers or by putting contaminated objects in their mouths.


Hookworm; transmissible to humans via soil contaminated by cat or dog feces. Hookworm eggs are deposited into the soil.


Ringworm; contracted by touching an animal with ringworm. Ringworm can spread while petting or grooming infected dogs or cats. You can also get ringworm from cows, goats, pigs and horses.


Dipylidium Caninum (Dog Tapeworm); child must ingest an infected flea and this doesn't happen often. Pets on the other hand often ingest fleas whilst grooming.


Threadworm; not caught from dogs and cats. The most likely transmission of threadworm is from other children.


Heartworm; transmitted by mosquitoes. Humans are not a natural host for

heart worm

Parasites, or what most people call "worms", is a "worm" which needs a host to survive. These worms lay eggs, such as in the soil. Small children or animals pick up the eggs on their hands; most small kids put their hands or fingers in their mouths (or cats/dogs lick their paws). The eggs then go into the intestines, where they hatch and attach to the intestinal wall where they grow. Eggs are excreted in waste--- if another child (or animal) is exposed to the excrement and swallows the egg, the egg can infect another child. Most of these kinds of worms come from dirty drinking water in underdeveloped countries. But children should be taught to keep dirty hands out of their mouths and to wash with soap.

Other types of parasitic worms burrow under the skin. These are more contagious from skin to skin contact. For example, Ringworm can be passed between persons.
