It is my understanding that there is not religious freedom in communist China. I know that at least Christians (and most likely other religious groups) are persecuted and even arrested for their beliefs. Missionaries and pastors can be thrown in jail if they proclaim their religion. Though many people continue to secretly practice worship, they do so at a great risk.
