Not all figures are compatible with all versions of Skylander games. If the game is older (like Giants) and the figure does not contain the data it needs to to play in the older version, it either will not function at all or it will show up as a lesser version of the character. So if the package says it does not work with Giants or Spiro's Adventure than it was made for some other version of the Skylanders games and should be used there instead. For example there are several versions of Trigger Happy released; the Spring 2014 Trigger Happy S3 in particular requires the Portal of Power to be used in-game. This did not exist when Giants was released.
