You're not meant to. It's a way for the caterpillar to get down safely, and if you break the thread the caterpillar will fall and get injured. Another reason they might be hanging from a thread is they are about to spin their cocoon to turn into a butterfly, and if they drop down at that moment they might not make it to their adult form at all! Leave them be and enjoy them, in both forms. ^^
