The definition of cult is "a group or sect bound together by veneration of the same thing, person, ideal, etc." or "a religion or sect considered to be false, unorthodox, or extremist".

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (commonly called Mormons) do not consider themselves to be a cult. They are often considered a cult because they all venerate and worship Jesus Christ, and because they are considered 'false and unorthodox' to the general public.

However, most groups considered to be cults are very secretive and not trusting of outsiders. This is not true of Mormons. Mormons are very open and desire to share their faith with all (this is why they send missionaries around the world). They invite anyone interested to ask questions and learn about their beliefs. They do not live in secluded 'compounds', but live and participate in mainstream society.
