I assume you mean CLEAR the pool.

That will depend on the situation in and around the pool. If you are alone in that setting, yes, that is probably a very good idea. If you have a few guards with you and the victum won't need the attention of several lifeguards then there's no reason to clear the whole pool.

In a spinal situation, it is MY OPINION (NLS instructors MAY argue this) that the pool should not be cleared until the victum in in some sort of traction or spinal hold. Instead a "pool stand" should be initiated where as the name would suggest, everyone in the pool is asked to stay as still as possible. Makes sense, right? Don't make waves.

Also remember that most lifeguards DON'T have to respond to emergencies constantly and in turn forgo some of their practice. This may lead to hasty decisions that are more reaction than cognitive action. Most "lay" people will respond in this manner, and remember that you're local lifeguard may have only performed one or two rescues in their career.
