It dramatised the effects of the Fugitive Slave Act, whereby the general public was ordered to report anyone who looked as though they might be a runaway slave, on pain of a heavy fine.

This offended many people who had not been very interested in slavery up till then, and drew them into the Abolitionist camp. Soon the Underground Railroad was in operation, smuggling slaves to freedom in Canada.
