the event in question that i think ur refering to happend on Apil 18,1775 and he basicaly was the "messenger/alarms man" of the bouston ariea at the begining of the revolutionary war. he went on horseback in his ariea shouting that the "british are coming" according to the poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow intitled "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere"
The question asked was about 1779 NOT 1775. Paul revere was a Colonel in charge of artillery during the Pennobscot Expedition where the British landed a force in what is now Maine. The Americans assembled a fleet of about 40 ships (of which approx half were transports) and 2300 men including artillery in an attempt to drive the British out. Despite a vast superiority in numbers and firepower the action was a disastrous failure and most of the ships were captured or destroyed. It is estimated that the Americans lost 450 dead, or missing (the majority lost during the retreat) and the British around 50 dead or captured. Until Pearl harbour this was the worst American naval disaster in it's history.
Paul Revere was found guilty by Court-Martial and relieved of command although later he managed to appeal against the decision and had it overturned.
