Bank one is on the same side of the engine (or car if it's a rear wheel drive) as cylinder number one. I believe the odds or on the left side and the evens or on the right.
The oxygen sensor bank 1 is located in the exhaust manifold. The oxygen sensor bank 2 on the 1996 BMW 328is is located in the head pipe.
Bank 1 (one) is the side in front of car (Bank 2 is rear, firewall side) 02 sensor 1 is upstream, on exhaust manifold (02 sensor 2 is downstream, by cat. conv.)
