baptism in the catholic faith is performed at a very young age (usually the person being baptised in still a toddler) the reason for the young age is based off the belief that all children are inherintly born the origionsl sin of Adam and eve. the baptism is a cleansing pf the sin from the child and a sort of initiation into the roman catholic church.
