Difficult. He was one of the only non-white students at an exclusive private high school (his grandparents had saved up in order to send him where he could get a good education). He did not feel as if he entirely fit in there. He excelled at sports, but was, by his own account, not very focused on school, and although he did graduate, he also began experimenting with marijuana while in high school. It would take a while before he came to a greater understanding of what he wanted to do with his life, and changed his focus to studying.
