It depends on the individual nature of the dog. Like us, they have different personalities. Some bitches want to be left alone to get on with it, others stick to you like glue, as if they dont wont to be left alone. As a general rule, they become quite restless, start heavy panting and wont lie at peace. Some bitches' waters break before the birth is immenent and other's waters break as they are actually giving birth. If you have a close relationship with your bitch, they will be more than happy to have you along acting as 'midwife'. You will know when she is about to give birth as she will behave quite differently from normal. Rectal temperature can be be taken to determine imminent birth but I didnt find this helpful as my bitch's temp fluctuated so often I ended up getting in a panic. I've acted midwife to the birth of 3 litters resulting in 28 puppies and each whelping was unique.
