A literal reading of The Bible has led some people to conclude that the Earth is only about 6,000 years old based on the geneology of the patriarchs. This geneology covers a period of about 4,000 years lisitng 42 generations from Adam to Jesus. Adding the 2,000 years since the time of Jesus gives us 6,000 years.
However this estimate does not take in to consideration the "Garden of Eden" period. This is the period between the first week in which the unverse was created; and the day that Adam and Eve were banished from the Garden of Eden. In fact the bible does not say at all how long the Garden of Eden period was. It might have been only a day or it might have been thousands or even billions of years.
