The Confederates refused to consider putting slaves into uniform until the very last weeks of the war, when it was too late to make any difference.

The Union army had no interest in recruiting blacks, but increasingly found itself with a whole lot of liberated slaves that they didn't know what to do with. These were put to work around the camps, and were gradually absorbed into the army.
