Nicodemus, Kansas was one of the first towns founded by African-Americans during the Reconstruction period. To many freed blacks who had already suffered the backlash of white southerners, Nicodemus seemed like an oasis. Kansas was considered a very liberal state with a large amount of abolitionists, such as John Brown, hailing from the state.
Every state has racist people in it, but here in Kansas there are not a lot of Blacks.

John Solomon Lewis was an African-American "exoduster" who traveled from Louisanna to settle with his family in Kansas during post civil-war Reconstruction in the South.

For the most part there were no major battles fought in Kansas during the US Civil War.
Kansas has an extremely bad job market because it was hit very bad by they economic downturn. There aren't vey big job opportunity for careers. I would recommend finding a job elsewhere if possible.
Prior to Kansas joining the Union, the Kansas Territory was a hotbed of violence and chaos between abolitionists and pro-slavery settlers. Kansas was known as Bleeding Kansas as these forces collided.
