Bone cells have different functions because bones are organs rather than tissues. A tissue is a collection of the same type of cells, while an organ is a collection of several tissues that functions as an integrated whole.

This helps keep the bones strong and functioning, because each type of cell takes care of part of the upkeep of the bones. The osteoblast breaks down old bone that is weak. The osteoclast builds new bone to replace the old bone. The osteocyte keeps the mature bone healthy and supplied with nutrients, as well as monitoring the bone around itself to ensure it is still healthy.
