Breast milk is milk that come from the breast. Breast milk is a general term we use to tell the difference between processed formula and milk produced by a human. It is an odd word since all milk is produced by mammary glands, whether human, bovine or dolphin.

It is all to do with hormones. When the woman is ready to give birth, a hormone is released which makes the uterus to contract and causes her to go into labour.

The release of this hormone causes another hormone to be released (prolactin) which causes breast milk to be produced because her body knows she is about to have off spring to feed.

That is the reason why breast milk is only produced when the woman is pregnant.
