Edmond Dantes, a handsome and young sailor, together with Fernand Mondego, to find a cure to his captain's ailment, went to an isolated island where napoleon hides. They had a fight with some soldiers around the area but it has been settled down after a while. Unfortunately, their captain did not survive. And so, before leaving the island, napoleon gives a sealed letter to Dantes to be given to a certain person, Dante didn't tell to anyone on the ship about the letter. Afterwards, they leave the island.

Arriving at their home town, M. Morrel, The ship owner, upon hearing the news of the captain's death, decided to make Dantes the new captain of the ship for he believes in Dante's abilities. Dante has a bright future ahead of him and he is planning to marry his girlfriend Mercedes. But all of this backfired. Many envied his luck and thus he earned enemies who wish for his downfall. They set - up Dantes into his despair. They used the letter that Bonaparte gave to him before leaving the island, the place where their captain died, as an evidence to prove that he is a Bonapartist, during that time royalist are the ones that is in power. The one who told about the letter was his friend during that time, Fernand Mondego, who is jealous to Dantes since he had won Mercedes heart that she loved for a long time, he saw the letter on Dantes when he was asleep, and thus, used this knowledge against him. Dante, despite being innocent, was sent to the prison Chateau D'If. They told to Dantes' family that he had committed treason and that he was killed.

At his first day in prison, he was whipped badly by the warden. And this event of whipping happened once every year. Dante's cell was dark and small, at the wall is writing, written by the previous occupant of that cell, the words "GOD WILL GIVE ME JUSTICE". This inspires Dantes to leave on despite the despair. Dantes, as year goes by, lose hope and decided to kill himself by means of suicide, but as he see the scriptures at the wall his mind changes. One another lonely day at his cell, a man named Abbe Farria appeared in his cell using a hole on the ground in which he dug by himself, the man taught that it was his way for freedom but he is wrong. The two become friends; Abbe asked Dantes' help in digging hole for escape, but Dantes refused the offer at first since will gain nothing upon helping him. Abbe offers him something that can never steal from him, Dantes asked if it is freedom, the man replied that it is not freedom he's talking about, what he will give Dantes is knowledge, education, since you can lose freedom but no one can steal knowledge from you. Dantes finally agreed. Abbe teach Dantes all of his vast knowledge about literature, sciences and languages, and even sword fighting. The Abbe also reveals to Dantes the location of the vast treasure on the Isle of Monte Cristo. Upon digging a tunnel, misfortune befalls on the Abbe, the ground fall onto him that cause his death. Dantes make a fool out of the warden, Abbe's bag was thrown in to the sea not knowing that it is not the Abbe's body that is in the bag, and it was Dantes. Dantes replaced Abbe's body with his own body in order to escape. So, before they threw the bag into the sea he grab the key at the warden's pants causing the warden to fall to the sea with him, and thus, he kills the man who always whipped him for years. At last, Dantes was freed from the prison.

Dantes was swept ashore, he happily run around, not noticing at first some smugglers at the shore. He asked these smugglers to help him, they agreed, only if Dantes would defeat one of their men. Dantes and the smuggler fight which resulted in Dantes victory. They helped Dantes as promised and the one Dantes defeated becomes loyal to him and always protects him.

Dantes went to the Isle of Monte Cristo after awhile; there he gains a vast amount of treasures that makes him incredibly rich. He returns to his hometown to exact his revenge, revenge to those who cause him sufferings and pain. Dantes also rewarded those who still remain loyal to him. Afterwards, he enters the Parisien society. Dantes buy a huge mansion and hides his true identity into the name of Count of Monte Cristo.

He begins his plan to take revenge against Fernand. He began his plan by being close to Fernand's son, Albert. This led in him being close to his enemies. None of his enemies recognize him and his enemies become so much interested in him for his fortune. Only Mercedes, at Albert's party, recognize him though he did not reveal it to anybody. At the Party, Dantes took the part of starting the opening o the dinner for Fernand is not in there. There he praises Albert's bravery, which led to Albert being too much attached to Dantes and Mercedes fully recognizing who count of Monte Cristo really is, she recognizes the counts' habits of curling his hair with his hands. After the party, as the count rides his carriage, he saw Mercedes sitting inside. She tells him that she already knows who he really is and told him that she remain faithful to Dantes. The Count of Monte Cristo denied the fact that he really is Dantes to Mercedes and escorts her to her house. Fernand's fortune is collapsing; the cause is his habit of always gambling, the count's use this very fact to make his situation worse than ever, thus, to start his revenge to this very man. And so, they become bankrupt. Fernand told Mercedes to pack her things for they are leaving to another place, Mercedes refuses, telling him that she and Albert will not come with him and thus revealed to him that Albert is not his real son. Dantes' also started his plan in destroying his other enemies, such is Villefort. Dantes joins Villefort while the latter is taking a bath. He tricked him into revealing all the bad deeds he had done. Villefort reveals his sins not knowing that the soldiers are just outside the bath. And thus, he is captured and sent to the prison Chateau D'If. This completes his revenge to him. Next is his revenge to Danglars, he set him up to his doom which causes him to get caught, and thus, Danglars received heavy punishment.

The count has a final duel with Fernand Mondego, now knowing that Dantes is the count, who wants to reclaim his honor. They dueled, and the count is leading and is about to put an end to it when Albert appears and stops him. Dantes did not falter he continued going on and when Dantes and Albert are about to hurt each other much more, Mercedes appear and reveal to the two of them that they are father and son, Fernand confirms this. They stop fighting. The fight between the count and Fernand resumes and the count kills him without mercy. The Count, Mercedes, and Albert live happily afterwards. The count's revenge is fulfilled.
