Call of Duty 4 is good for multiplayer and has a decent campaign. The graphics are good and is an enjoyable game.
Call of Duty: World at War has an excellent campaign with Nazi Zombies being the best feature in my opinion. The multiplayer is good but overall Treyarch have shown they are great at Campaign and Infinity Ward is good for multiplayer.
They are both good games but it depends whether you will be focus on sp or mp.
If you like World War II go for CoD 5 and if not CoD 4 is the way to go.
The newer choice is Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 or Call of Duty Black Ops
