If you're just starting out and have no experience in the markets, I would use a broker. If you're dead set on using a self-trading platform, I would stick with known vendors like E-Trade or Scottrade. Software, this is a growing industry so it's good practice. You wont lose much if any money and you'll be able to practice buying and selling in something thats considered really stable: I'd start with Apple and Apple products.
