Honestly, there's no 100% way of keeping budgies from fighting with one another. You have to slowly introduce them when they are young, (one at a time or if they have already been living together in an aviary try to pair them up with the ones that are preening or hanging around one another already) and it just takes time. I want to say that you're doing the right thing by introducing 1 female and 2 males, it's always best to have more males than females because female are very dominating and have the tendency to pick on the males if there are less of them.

Good luck!

With or without a dominant fish in the tank two female bettas shouldn't fight. It's only the male of the species that fights.

How should you care for budgies?

Budgies make a great pet and companion. Here I will not be able to cover everything you will need to know. I do not recommend buying budgies as gifts, or as an impulse purchase. To be able to properly care for a budgie you will need to have researched them, considered if you will be able to provide everything they need (for their entire lifespan) and prepare. All this will take months so do not expect to have a budgie on your shoulder in a few days. Firstly: will you be able to care for him/her for its WHOLE lifespan? Really think. Will you just get sick of him/her and neglect your pet? Unfortunately too many budgies end with this fate. Here is a sad, but a very true poem. A Cheap Bird's Pleaby Joyce GlassWhat is it that my life is worthHow much will you payTo what extent would you goIf I get ill today?I know I'm not an expensive birdMy cost is fairly cheapBut what is the price you put on lifeFor something that you keep?My wings still spread out the sameMy heart still has a beatSo why is it that my cousinsAre the ones you hold so sweet?I cannot help that I was bornWithout a golden eggWill you still take care of meOr make me plead and beg?I rely on you to help meAs I can't do it for myselfWill you take the steps neededOr just put me on the shelf? So when you walk by mePlease look me in the eyeIf it would come down to itWould I live or die? What you will need to provide for your budgie: Proper health care, Clean the food and water daily, an adequate living space (the MINIMUM cage size for one budgie is 18x18x18"), daily "out of cage time", daily social interaction, stimulation and a proper diet (did I leave out anything?). Are you willing to provide all that? Can you afford it? Yes? Well now we can take a brief look at caring for budgies. One or two.. or more? In the wild budgies live in large flocks. All of our pet budgies today are descended from these wild ancestors and still crave budgie on budgie company. One of the sadest things I have seen is a lone budgie sitting in a cage with no toys, one perch, on an all seed diet and no human socialisation. Unfortunately this is where most "gifts" and impulse purchases end up. There are varying opinions when it comes to keeping only one budgie. Some say it is okay if the human spends so much time with their pet. Others say that humans cannot stand in for a budgie friend (which is true to an extent, we cannot groom them, talk to them and be there for them 24/7) and it is cruel to keep a budgie on its own. I stand in the middle here, but I do not recommend keeping only one budgie. Especially if you will not be able to spend at least 2 hours with them everyday. Three budgies? So what about two hens and one cock? Or two cocks and one hen? Big no-no Yes, like Betta's some people may be able to defy nature and keep the peace.. but these people are experienced. Not beginners Especially with hens (they can get really feisty) fights over mates will occur. These are not disputes where the other will normally accept defeat.. most will fight to the death. Years ago I was naive enough to keep two hens with one cock.. the "other" hen attempted to kill the pairs offspring (I lost three, it was very gory and upsetting) and was servery wounded herself. I learnt the hard way. Please, please do not make the same mistake. Also keep in mind, like humans, two of the same gender may not get along. Keep careful watch of your pets. Getting ready for a budgie What will you need? Well of course you will need a cage, a nice good sized one with a flat roof, please. Bar spacing can be a problem. Some sneaky budgies have been known to slip through cages with bar sizing mean for bigger parrots.. take a look at the size of the gaps. Amazing, huh? You will need a large selection of toys, perches and things to chew, nibble and destroy. One of the favourite pastime's... destroying. The traditional food and water bowl is not a good choice. In the wild budgies will spend most of the day foraging for different foods, which provides stimulation. Going to the same place everyday getting the same food does not provide stimulation. Be creative, hide different treats in hiding spots around the cage. Gradually add beads and bobs to you budgies "food bowl" so they have to work for their food (guides for this can be found on the Internet). Natural perches Budgies don't sit on boring pieces of plastic in the wild. Branches come in all different sizes and textures, and this keeps the budgies feet from becoming "curved in" or flat. If you only have one size perch that is relatively small your bird will start having problems walking and flexing there feet, same situation with too large perches. Remember to provide variety. Types of branches that are safe for budgies are native eucalyptus and some fruit trees. Always make sure the branch your going to use is safe. After you have your branch you will need to sterilize it. "Baking it" is probably the best method for this. Iodine, Grit and Cuttle bone Budgies need calcium and the mineral iodine, and many people believe these are good sources. In my opinion iodine blocks are necessary I have one available in all of my cages. Cuttle bone is a different matter. Some people use it as a source of calcium and for budgies to sharpen their beaks on. But calcium can be obtained elsewhere, and most of it goes to the bottom of the cage anyway. Budgies will sharpen their beaks and their perches and gum nuts (yes! they love them! Remember to sterilize them first) so it's not need for this purpose either. Whether or not you choose to use it, they still love destroying it! So for the ones who will use it get it. Grit. Grit is one of the most debated topics in budgie care. Some argue that as their budgies eat seeds, they need it to help grind up the seeds inside them. But budgies do not eat their seeds whole. They hull their seeds, and therefore do not need to ground them in their stomachs. To much grit can actually cause health problems. So in my books it's a no. Seed vs. Pellets Why do we give budgies seed? Because in the wild that's what they eat. Well, we are not entirely right with that. The seeds many people are still feeding their budgies are brown and old. In the wild the seeds that are eaten are fresh and young. Seeds contain a high fat content, in the wild the birds are constantly moving, flying and exercising. They are using up that fat. But in domesticated cases budgies get no where near that kind of exercise, and the seeds often end up making the bird obese. Wild budgies do not live entirely on seed, either. Seed does not provide all the nutrients a budgie needs to stay healthy. So when we are feeding our budgies seed are we really giving them an ideal diet? No. A great, balanced diet consists of pelleted budgie food (can also be crumbles, nuggets, ect.) and a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables and nuts. But, as you are soon to find out, the promising pellet is not all it seems. The only flaw is getting your budgie to actually eat the pellets. This is a long, hard process that can take more than a year to accomplish. The same goes for fresh foods. Never, ever, ever take away all the seed and put pellets in straight away. Your budgie will reject the pellets and die of starvation. Take it slow. There are some great guides on the Internet. Getting your budgie I highly recommend getting your budgie from an experienced breeder. Why? You will be able to see exactly where the chick grew up, so you know if the place was clean. You can see the budgies parents, if you wish. The breeder will give you reliable information on gender and age (the old case of "the pet shop assistant told me it was a 6 week old cock", when in actual fact the budgie was a 3 year old hen). Keep in mind that in some mutations males do not develop blue ceres but pink ones, it's completely normal for a hen to have a blue cere and not all mutations develop iris rings. The birds should not be on an all seed diet (preferably no seed at all) and the parents or any of the other birds that have been in contact with your choice ill. The cages must be spacious and clean. The birds feathers should be shiny-looking. Another fantastic option would be to get your budgies from a rescue center/shelter. There's a budgie in need out there. Do not support budgie mills, yes, they exist :(. Many pet shops are stocked by these disgusting businesses. I find that most pet shops are dirty, unreliable and most are in it just for the money. Age What age should your budgie be? Yes, younger ones are easier to tame. If you are new to budgies I would recommend one of about 6 weeks of age. Boy or girl? I bet you have heard that only cocks will talk? Also maybe you can only tame cocks? Wrong. Yes, it is much easier to train cocks to talk. But hens can also learn to talk. If you want a budgie only to teach it talk, I don't recommend it. Whether male or female, some budgies simply just may never want to talk. Is it easier to tame cocks? From what I've heard yes. But I don't know for sure because out of my six budgies five are girls, and my male was harder to tame than some of my hens.. Every budgie is unique, just like humans. My little Riley (hen) is the most friendly, chirpy girl I have ever seen. But then there's one of my other hens, Honey, who wouldn't look twice at one of my attempts to get her to use her toys. Taming/Training Some say you can train a budgie in 30 minutes.. but unless your Eliza Thornberry you will not have a bond with your pet for months, I can assure you. Talking softly to your budgie after she/he has settled in, then slowly building up trust as you start to place your hand in the cage, always talking softly. Remember that every budgie is unique and some will take longer than others. Neverever push your budgie and never, ever force your budgie to do anything. The only thing that will result from this is one very scared budgie and no trust at all. Once you have built up enough trust you can start to take your budgie out of the cage. Clicker training is great. I highly recommend it. I hope I have covered most of the basics here. Do not get you budgies just for the sake of breeding them. You will need years of experience for that. Continue to research budgies, and I hope you might get one in the future. TalkBudgies is a great active friendly forum just for budgies. I recommend (I use that word a lot) it to any budgie lover.
