Eating disorders that can cause malnutrition are most commonly anorexia and bulimia. In both, the body is not gaining the essential nutrients (vitamins, minerals, calories, fats, ect.) that it needs because the individual is not eating enough food (anorexia) or is purging / vomiting the food back up (bulimia), so the body does not get enough of what it needs daily. As a result, it must rely on stores of nutrients and calories (energy) from fat and mucle cells. This will soon run out, and the body becomes malnourished.
Since the person who is anorexic is starving themselves, they are not getting the proper nutrition they need for their body to maintain the same way as would if sustenance was being consumed. Since their bodies are getting little to no nutrition, the formation of malnutrion begins and continues to get worse unless something is done about it
Malnutrition is more of a state where a person does not get enough nutrients to keep their body healthy. Anorexia is more of a disorder, sort of a mental disorder, where a person thinks about their weight and their food intake and intentionally restricts their food intake to stay at an unhealthy weight. Anorexia is much deeper than just malnutrition. It also has affects on how the anoretic thinks, and acts. Anoretics constantly think about food, what they will eat, what they won't eat, how they can get out of eating, etc. Some effects of anorexia are growth of lanugo (baby hairs on the arms, back, face), loss of hair on the head, isolation from other people and food, trouble thinking, and also many other health issues. In conclusion, malnutrition does have to do with anorexia, but they are not the same thing. Anorexia is much more complex.
