In caring for an Alzheimer's sufferer, I found that diphenhydramine (Benadryl) significantly worsened symptoms for several days after her 2nd night of taking a 25mg dose. The issue was not daytime drowsiness, or loss of balance. It was a stepwise drop in cognitive ability, cooperativeness, and emotional stability. Antihistamines reduce one's response to pathogens. Perhaps the effect that diphenhydramine has on Alzheimer's patients points to a possible cause or mechanism for the disease. Any research to support this apparent link?
