Benadryl is usually used to control itching, particularly from allergic reactions. However, in very rare instances a person can be allergic to Benadryl itself. In that case it might cause itchiness.

I've been researching this question, my father in law was just told that he is allergic to Benadryl. The rash that he has is like a 3rd degree burn. Very very painful. As part of his cancer treatment they have been injecting him with benadryl for the last 2 months and now he finds out that it is causing him all of his grief! I found a website that lists possible side effects. One of the listed Rare effects is a rash along with 10 or so other rare side effects. An interesting find as it is used to treat and prevent rashes. Take a look for yourself.

I have tried many different sleep aids and all the ones containing diphenhydramine (which is in Advil PM, Tylenol PM, Motrin PM and most generic brands) cause my symptoms of RLS to flare up. I have a hard time finding any over the counter sleep aid that works.

Benadryl is an over the counter antihistamine. It is used to treat allergic reactions. Since Benadryl is an antihistamine, it would be very unlikely to cause a rash.

It is more of a temporary think to use. If I had itchy skin I would take an allergy tablet and see a doctor.
