Jesus was criticized for healing a man on the Sabbath. The Sabbath was meant for rest, but sometimes practical needs must be met. The point of Christianity is not to nitpick over religious regulations but to have faith and use discernment.

Imagine telling a parent of very young children not to change diapers on the Sabbath!

<< Matthew 12 >>

New American Standard Bible © ---- Sabbath Questions 1 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath, and His disciples became hungry and began to pick the heads of grain and eat. 2 But when the Pharisees saw this, they said to Him, "Look, Your disciples do what is not lawful to do on a Sabbath." 3 But He said to them, "Have you not read what David did when he became hungry, he and his companions, 4 how he entered the house of God, and they ate the consecrated bread, which was not lawful for him to eat nor for those with him, but for the priests alone? 5 "Or have you not read in the Law, that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple break the Sabbath and are innocent? 6 "But I say to you that something greater than the temple is here. 7 "But if you had known what this means, 'I DESIRE COMPASSION, AND NOT A SACRIFICE,' you would not have condemned the innocent. Lord of the Sabbath 8 "For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."

9 Departing from there, He went into their synagogue. 10 And a man was there whose hand was withered. And they questioned Jesus, asking, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?"-so that they might accuse Him. 11 And He said to them, "What man is there among you who has a sheep, and if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will he not take hold of it and lift it out? 12 "How much more valuable then is a man than a sheep! So then, it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath." 13 Then He said to the man, "Stretch out your hand!" He stretched it out, and it was restored to normal, like the other. 14 But the Pharisees went out and conspired against Him, as to how they might destroy Him.

Is working on the Sabbath right?

AnswerWhether it is right to work on the Sabbath depends on religious beliefs. For example, Orthodox Jews would say it is not right; liberal Jews would support the right to do so, especially in the essential services; while secular Jews would say that the Sabbath does not really matter. Similarly, some fundamental Christians would see work on Sundays as wrong, whereas most Christians would have no serious objections and atheists, once again, would say that the Sabbath does not really matter.AnswerJesus taught that resting on the Sabbath was for the well-being and benefit of humans. He also taught that some work may be necessary or unavoidable.

What are the worship parallels between Saturday Sabbath and Sunday worship?

In the Bible Old Testament, it was the law that the seventh day' should be kept holy and that it should be a day of rest. The word 'Sabbath' means 'seventh'. The Jews chose this seventh day as commanded by God because according to their beliefs, God made the world in 6 days and on the seventh he rested - making that day holy. The day that we recognise today as the 'Sabbath' is actually Saturday. So the Sabbath day (Saturday) became a holy day of rest for the Jews - and still is.The problem was, however, that the Jewsh lawmakers fabricated many other rules about the Sabbath - for example, you were not allowed to kindle a flame on the sabbath as this was 'work'. You were not even allowed to help someone in trouble as this was 'work'. Even walking was considered 'work' and so limits were placed even on this leisure activity to avoid it becoming 'work'. Even today, in strict Jewish homes, they have special light switches that work without the risk of an electrical spark (as this is common with normal switches) for fear of creating a spark which could be seen as kindling a flame and therefore 'work'.When Jesus came along, he picked up on the hypocrisy of what the Jews were doing. Even if someone was sick or dying, the Jewish authorities would not tend to them until the Sabbath was over as this would be deemed 'work' - and often, a day llater was too late, or resulted in the infliction of unnecessary suffering. The Sabbath idea had begun to be the tail wagging the dog rather than vice versa - man was becoming a slave to the sabbath rules instead of what God originally intended. Jesus therefore flouted the Jews' laws by healing on the Sabbath and putting the Sabbath back in the place of what God intended - much to the anger of the lawmakers in the Jewish society. So, modern Christians still observe the 'Sabbath' - although it is the Sabbath day as God intended. Instead of the Saturday being adopted as the 'seventh' day, Christians adopted the firstday of the week as a 'seventh' day - or Sunday, as it was on this day that the resurrection of Jesus, the major event central to the Christian faith, took place. This day became known as 'the Lord's Day' and is the equivalent of the Jewish Sabbath for Christians. However, on Sundays, Christians are not bound by rules as are the Jews. Yes, Christians go to church, but then they also worship, if devout Christians, throughout the rest of the week too. Christians rest on Sundays, but also use them for leisure, meeting with family (we often have our daughters round and their respective spouses, for Sunday lunch), or catching up with things we want to do rather than things we have to do. However, Christians see little wrong if you are called to work on a Sunday if it is necessary (for example if you are a nurse, doctor, fireman, ambulance driver, power plant worker and so on) provided you take a 'day of rest' once in a week where you can unwind, worship God and forget work. My wife, who is a vicar, always 'works' on a Sunday - but she takes her 'Sabbath' on a Monday when the phone is off the hook and we disappear to the country. Christians should see nothing wrong in this as Jesus said - the Sannath was made for man - not man for the Sabbath."

Are you ever allowed to break a sabbath rule if so when?

For Jews, work is generally prohibited on the Sabbath. Preservation of life takes priority, though, so Jews are allowed and even required to break the Sabbath if that will save a life. If a woman is in labor on the Sabbath, everything required to assure safe childbirth is permitted. If someone attacks with apparent intent to kill, all reasonable defensive acts are permitted. If someone is injured, treating that injury to the point that there is no risk of death takes priority. The threat to life can be remote, so dealing with a debilitating injury that might shorten someone's life it it is not immediately addressed suffices to suspend the Sabbath.

Is the sabbath really on a Saturday?

The Sabbath is on a Saturday for those whose religious traditions say so. Other religious traditions place the Sabbath on Sunday or on Friday. If you are part of one of those traditions, then the Sabbath is not on a Saturday. For Jews, the Sabbath is observed from Sundown on Friday until the appearance of 3 stars on Saturday night. For Muslims, the Sabbath is on Friday. For most, but not all, Christians, the Sabbath is on Sunday.

Is it ok to walk your dog on the sabbath?

Orthodox Jews are not allowed to travel, so they'll have to ask someone to help them.

Is studying for an examination on the Sabbath day wrong?

Christian ResponseThat depends entirely on what you believe. Can you turn a page of a book on the Sabbath, can you drive a car on the sabbath? It depends on what you consider work. Now on the other hand. I know of someone who was a Jew that said it was ok to do anything that was for the Good of you or others on the Sabbath. That Jew was Jesus Christ. Its up to what you believe and what your family believes.I believe the Sabbath was made for man, in my own mind, the thing I think we should not do is "work" for a paycheck if we can avoid it.But the answer is very subjective to what you believe as a Jew even some Christians try not to work on the Sabbath (although they consider it Sunday)Jewish ResponseSo long as your study does not involve writing or using electronic devices, such as a computer, there is no issue in doing so on Shabbat.

Why is sabbath observed every week?

Sabbath or שבת (Sha'boss) in Hebrew is celebrated on the 7th day of every week because the Christians and Jews believe that God created the world in 6 days and on the 7th day He rested and therefore so do His people. For Jews the Sabbath is celebrated on Saturday because that is the 7th day of the week in the Jewish calender, for Christians the 7th day is Sunday.

How many Christian churches are there in Mecca?

Are there Christians who celebrate Saturday Sabbath?

Of course there are. God's Sabbath is on Saturday. Only way to keep the 4th commandment is to keep the Sabbath holy. Nowhere in the bible does it say itwas changed. The calender was never changed so the first day of the week is Sunday. Look at a calendar. The Lord taught us about the Sabbath.Matthew 12
