to answer your initial question, no you can't take songs from the radio and transfer them to your iPod, unless you buy or download the original song and put it on your iPod normally.
A USB on a car radio can be used to listen to music. One can plug in their iPod or MP3 player listen to songs on the car stereo rather than listening to the radio.
Make sure that the songs that were downloaded onto your iPod are in MP3 format. Songs downloaded from iTunes are not in MP3 format. Even though you can hear the songs on your iPod when you connect headphones to it, the iPod port in your car might not recogonize the songs. The songs on your son's iPod might be in MP3 and that is why you could hear it.
You don't need a car ipod adapter to listen to music in the car, unless you want to listen to songs off an Apple device. You can try your radio instead for fresh tunes.
If your car only has a radio, you will need to purchase an FM aux tuner. This will then plug into your iPod and you will tune your cars radio to the frequency that is set on the aux tuner.
I take it you have a FM radio, if so you can get a FM transmitter for your Ipod, All you have to do then is tune your radio to the frequency of the transmitter .
Some functions that iPod car transmitters have are easy to use interfaces, creating mini radio stations, and transmitting what's being played on the iPod onto the FM radio and having your car be able to tune into that.
Car stereos come with additional audio ports in the back this was to be used with the external trunk mount CD changers ( 1995 and up models ) later, when CD changer was not available we use the port for satellite radios, or rear DVD. but this ports plugs are still there in 90% of the vehicles from 1995 and up you can use that plug on the radio to install an iPod interface your radio will controls the iPod, playlist albums, songs if the radio was satellite ready ( 2003 and up ) you can see text from your iPod iPhone in the factory radio screen, this units are not FM or wireless. Yes, but you will need an auxiliary cable.
To install an iPod Dock to your car, you will need to connect an adapter cable. The adapter cable fits between the radio and the car's original harness.
