I would not recommend it. I have read about it being bad for your laptop to be on sleep mode all of the time, especially if you carry it with you while it is on sleep mode. Also, your laptop will get slower after a while.
I think the traveling with your laptop in sleep mode is less of a problem if you have a Solid State Drive (SSD). Never the less, I would recommend at least once a week turning your computer off entirely for a few hours.

There are a number of plastic laptop cases that essentially just snap onto your laptop and remain attached to it all the time. Speck products makes a good one. Don't buy one from a mainstream store, go online where you will get a good deal.

If it's only going to be a few minutes then no problem. If it's going to be 30 minutes or so then _I_ wouldn't. It still creates a bit of heat and when you have it in a bag/case you are actually insulating it and it will store all that heat. Another reason is some times in standby or sleep mode some computers or HD's won't have the HD "arm" locked away into a neutral position where it won't damage the HD platters them selves when bounced around. You should never move a Laptop around while it's on, asleep or on standby for this reason. Moving it around on your lap is one thing but traveling in a bag or case is another thing.

To exit out of sleep mode you can either move around your mouse, or press any button on your keyboard. Once you do this, all the windows that you had up when you turned your computer to sleep, should still be on your screen. Hope this helped!
