Yes you can. They will continue to contact you to offer extended warranties for many years after the regular warranty has expired. Typically it is not a good idea to purchase extended warranties.

Also if you sell the vehicle before the extended warranty runs out you can request a prorated refund on the unused months !!!!! It all depends on what American car you are talking about. Some cars have a dismal reliability record and in that case the extended warranty may be a good buy. In most instances I would never buy an extended warranty, but then I never buy cars that have a bad reliability record. Name the make, model, & year and I could give you a more informed answer. And how long are you likely to own the vehicle? If you are getting a five year lease, it may be worth it. If you are going on a 3 year lease and will trade it in, there is no point. And you could buy a GM car that already has a 5 year or 50k mile warranty and not have to pay more.
