I see no reason not to use a mandolin slicer for any suitable food...bread, meat, cheese, etc. However, you may want to make sure your mandolin is dishwasher safe and wash it thoroughly if it has been used to cut raw meat (or have a separate one for meat).

Is there a difference between a mandolin and a violin or is it the selfsame instrument but played in a different way?

Yes, there is a difference. A mandolin is a lute-like instrument, played like a guitar: http://www.answers.com/topic/mandolin?cat=entertainment A violin is a stringed instrument, played with a bow: http://www.answers.com/topic/violin?cat=entertainment However, just as there are four members of the violin family - the violin, viola, cello/violoncello and double bass, there are four basic members of the mandolin family which bear some relation to the violin family's relationships. These are as follows: * mandolin, with a range similar to that of the violin * mandola or tenor mandola, tuned to a fifth below the mandolin, meaning it has the same relationship as a viola to a violin * mandocello or mandolin cello * mando-bass, which is tuned like a double bass There are also several other mandolins in the mandolin family, such as the octave mandolin, the piccolo or sopranino mandolin, and several other variants of the mandolin from other countries.

My wife inherited an old cheese slicer. Where online can we find cheese slicer wire to repair this slicer?

The very best place to start is to find out the make and model of the cheese slicer. Then go online and see if you can find just the wire to fix the other one. Hope this helps and thank you.

How to Buy The Right Food Slicer?

Food slicers are essential but ignored kitchen appliances. These appliances do what their name suggests – they slice foods – and they are generally multipurpose, which means they can be used to slice a variety of foods. However, they might have different features and functions. For this reason alone, you should know how to buy the right food slicer for your needs. Here is some information that can help you. ▪ The size is important. What kinds of foods will you be slicing and what sizes are they? Do you want thin slices or thick slices? Though food slicers do have multiple attachments which make them versatile, it is good if you know in advance what they are capable of. For example, if you are going to slice only vegetables, a low-powered food slicer will do. But for meats, you will need a more powerful one. ▪ There are usually two models of food slicers available – the plastic ones and the stainless steel ones. You will find that the stainless steel ones are costlier, but they are definitely a better choice because they are more durable and tougher. ▪ The cleanliness of the food slicer is important. You have to clean these immediately after each use, because foods that remain on the slicer will rot and contaminate other foods. At the same time, you have to make sure that the slicer is not too difficult to clean. ▪ Look for the safety features. If a food slicer is more expensive, it is probably safer. It is best to have a food slicer that has safety precautions built in that doesn’t allow it to be turned on automatically. Do not skimp on food slicers. These appliances are extremely useful and they will become a part of your kitchen for a long time. Make sure you are getting the features and the durability you want; that is what will make this a good suitable purchase for your kitchen.
