You would need to file an extension if you wish to file your taxes after April 15th. But not everyone is eligible to do so. It would more pertain to people who are overseas in the military or if you are in a disaster area that was hit by mother nature.

What is the last date you can send your taxes into the Federal Government?

For the tax year 2009 any amount of taxes that were owed to the United States Treasury were supposed to be postmarked before midnight April 15 2010. After that day the past due taxes will be accumulating penalties and interest until the amount is paid in full. The 1040 federal income tax return was also due at time but you could have applied for an extension until October 15 2010 for the filing of the 1040 federal income tax return. The extension is NOT an extension to pay any of the amount of the taxes that may have been due to be paid by the April 15 deadline. You can still file the 1040 tax return online until October 15 2010.
