this answer is coming from personal experience. i am also a retired registered nurse. i was diagnosed with depression 19 years ago but suspect that I've been depressed since puberty. I've been taking antidepressants on and off for that period of time. i have no diagnosis of bi-polar disease.
i had a heart attack (myocardial infarction) 3 months ago. and yes, i am very depressed about the attack, my physical restrictions, added medications and inability to become employed at this time.
so yes, i believe that myocardial infarcts can cause depression, which is an imbalance of certain neurotransmitters called dopamine and serotonin. low levels of these chemical messagers cause adverse changes in mood, emotions and behavior.
as for bi-polar disease, i do not think there is a correlation with heart attacks. genetics and outside factors appear to cause the disease, although a definitive cause has never been discovered. bi-polar, or manic depression, as it used to be called, presents itself during the teenage and college years of life. the neurotransmitter, norepinephrine is the culprit, since low levels will cause the depression and elevated levels cause the mania.
phosphorus is not linked to any clinical depression or bi-polar disorder. phosphorus is important in the phospo-lipid bilayer of cells, it is in ATP which is the energy that our body produces, and many other things, just not depression or bipolar disorder.
It is a mood disorder that consists of drastic mood swings, that are at both sides of the pole. Either depression or mania. Rarely in between. Hence the name, BI POLAR. Manic depression is another reference to bi-polar disorder. ( BI=both POLAR=pole )

The root word for bipolar disorder is "bi-" meaning two, and "polar" referring to opposite extremes. This reflects the characteristic swings between the two poles of mania and depression in individuals with this disorder.
