Microsoft have said that the operating system is the biggest difference between Word for Mac and Word for Windows. I use OpenOffice which is able to read, write and save Word Docs on this iMac. OpenOffice is also low cost especially compared to Office
Yes - MS Office can read OpenOffice documents.
There should be no problem running OpenOffice on Windows 10 and OpenOffice has always been able to read Word files (there may be problems writing some of those files back out as the same Word format due to licensing issues, but if you intend on switching to OpenOffice you will be saving as OpenOffice format not Word).

Both .doc and .docx formats are native to Microsoft Word, however they can be read and modified by a number of compatible word processing programs. These programs include Google Docs, Kingsoft Writer, Openoffice Writer and Libreoffice Writer. Keep in mind, however, that documents written with Microsoft Word may have some issues when being imported to other programs. You can try to open the document in one of these compatible programs to see if everything looks okay. If it does, you can usually continue to use that program to edit the document without issues. In addition, you can save documents from these programs in a Microsoft Word format (doc or docx) and they will usually render correctly in Microsoft Word.
It uses ODF (Open Document Format) created for OpenOffice. It can be read by many other software packages. Additionally, Openoffice and LibrOffice can also save in other formats including various releases of Microsoft Office.

Open Office will open Wordpad files without any difficulties. By default, Wordpad saves documents as 'rich text format' (.rtf) - you can specify different formats if you choose. OpenOffice will read rtf files without any problems.
