I just started the Nuva ring and I was suspicious of weight gain myself. My Dr. told me that you will not gain weight from being on it or on any other Birth Control pills for that matter. She said that people think that because they usually start birth control at an age when your body changes and you gain a little weight anyway. I haven't been on it that long to tell anyway, but if I do gain weight I will be off of it. Hope that helps :)

I didn't want to erase the answer above but the doctor is right you won't gain weight from it or any birth control PILLS, however, you can and most likely will gain weight if you're taking a shot, such as Depot Medroxyprogesteron Acetate.

Answerthe answers above are correct. I've been on the ring for a year now and i havent gained one pound because of it. ofcourse it could be i have gained weight because of poor eating habits and exercise but that's all normal. I recommend nuva ring, it's so efficient. Answer

Generally what I find when it comes to birth controls is that bloating is pretty much what makes women feel 'fatty' when on hormone therapies in general. Now... the Depo shot certainly makes this 'fatty' feeling worse and it can also effect your habits. It is not a cyclic birth control method like estrogen based birth controls, and so more often than not... even though you don't get mood swings as badly, you do have hormonal changes in behavior that are ongoing and consistent. Increased appetite or craving sugars can be one, increased fatigue can be another. When you combine things like that... and a general apathy towards your eating habits or exercise habits then you can very likely gain weight. Be fair though, it is not entirely the birth control... it would not be like it is making your body store fat like some fatty machine.... its simply that your cravings and habits may change and you are not being mindful of it. If you are mindful of what you eat and how you exercise then it should not effect much at all when it comes to actually getting fatter and gaining solid weight.

Cyclic birth controls that contain both Estrogen and Progesterone cause fatigue, cravings, and changes in behaviors as well, but it is usually not consistant as with the Depot shot. Generally you will have a week where you want to eat all the delicious fatty foods in the world, or you will have a week where you don't want to eat at all aside from simply keeping hunger away. When it comes to energy, you may have a week where you feel like you are full of zest and where you are as peppy as a cheerleader, and another week where you just want to stay in bed all the time and wallow. It would be different for each woman, but generally it all balances out and with the changes in mood and behavior... women tend to be more mindful of it and actually think to themselves 'Hmmm... wow... I am really craving sweets these past few days'. So gaining fatty weight off while on them is far less likely. Now... since it is cyclic and you are supposed to have a period week and such, a gal CAN be victim to some major bloating... sometimes more bloating than you had before you were on birth control. Constipation can also be a side effect of hormones and common sense should spell out to you that if you are not getting rid of waste... then guess where it is. If you become bloated and constipated then the scale will definitely say that you are a few pounds heavier.... but its not that you are getting fat... its mostly water.

One of my frequent issues with birth control is that after I am on it for several months, my body just decides that it doesn't want to have periods anymore... its after that point that I start bloating and gaining weight. This has happened to me several times with different birth controls. For me its like I have PMS and get headache and bloat, and then the next week the PMS goes away but the bloat stays lol.

In all instances though... after I stop the birth control I completely de-bloat. I go through a phase where I have to use the restroom constantly (loosing a lot of the water weight), and I also end up having to go number 2 more times than what makes sense in my mind (i.e. ' I only ate a bowl of cerial this morning, why am I having to go three times tonight ?). My waste line generally starts to look tighter and the puffy spots under my eyes and along my jawline all un-puff. So... all in all, I usually end up having any pounds that I gained while being on birth control all shed off in two weeks and I am back to my normal weight again... and in the case with Nuva Ring... even a bit lighter.

DONT discontinue birth control after several months just to de-bloat though... most women don't even bloat all that much... its too silly and superficial and if you are having unprotected sex regularly then you have to bear in mind... if bloating made you look a little bit plumper... imagine what pregnancy will do. Most people don't carry enough water in their bodies anyways, so sometimes the bloating is beneficial rather than a downer.

I was on the ring for a few months at a consistent weight and then I stopped taking it because I wasn't sexually active at the time. I gained a considerable amount of weight and my periods stopped. I don't know if the weight gain was caused by the absence of the ring- there were a lot of other contributing factors in my life at the time that could have caused weight gain- but it was directly related to my periods stopping. I'm sorry I couldn't offer a better answer, but I saw that no one else had replied and I thought a little feedback would help. :)

It can...I've been on it for about 2 -2 1/2 yrs now & I've noticed that I didn't gain weight, but its really hard for me to lose weight.
I absolutely have an increased appetite on the ring, but since i made a conscious effort to eat healthy i did not gain weight.
