Only if you are mentally challenged or handicapped to a point where you can not take care of yourself and had it since childhood. Then parents can get a court order to keep supporting you. If you are healthy - of course not.

When a patient needs a machine, or a ventilator to breath for them, then that patient is on artificial life support. When a patient does not have the ability to breath on their own, or eat on their own, they will need artificial life support, or they will die.

the way i see it the role of friendship in caring for the mentally disabled i would say with my own personal experiences the role of friendship is being there for the special needs when they need help being patient when they are having trouble telling them that they can do it on whatever they are trying to do and just being a friend! special needs need help and need a friend and people should be there to help them support them and love them
